SPACE2IDGO at a glance

Unlocking access to third countries for European space innovation.

SPACE2IDGO is the very first structured action for Space Service Providers and Application Developers to directly address the huge economic potential of several industrial sectors, carefully selected at European and International level with a clear “market pull” orientation.

After a successful Strand 1 mission, SPACE2IDGO (SPACE CLUSTERS INTERNATIONAL DIVERSIFICATION GO) powered up and launched its Strand 2 project during a kick-off meeting held in Brussels on February 22nd and 23rd 2018.

Bringing together world-class expertise in space activities and high performance in 5 ground businesses (Mobility – Energy – Logistics, Creative Industries and Agriculture), the SPACE2IDGO consortium is made up of eight European clusters coming from 5 European countries: Aerospace Valley (coordinator – FR), Corallia/ Research Center Athena (GR), Skywin Wallona (BE), Logistics in Wallonia (BE), TeRN (IT), Madrid Aerospace Cluster (ES), Asociacion Sostenibilidad y Energias Renouvables (ES), ALSIA (IT).

Its main ambition is to implement the partnership’s joint Internationalisation Strategy Plan, boosting clusters presence and European SMEs business in 5 top-priority countries: Canada, United Arabic Emirates, Colombia, Chile and China.

Capitalizing on the results of SPACE2ID project (Strand 1), the consortium will concentrate its effort on the 5 market sectors (Mobility, Energy, Logistics, Creative Industries and Agriculture, or MELCA) where the use of satellite data provide strong added value and accelerate the development of new value chains.

Space2ID Closure Meeting: Just refuelling…

On Monday 27th February Space2ID partners gathered together in Brussels for the final meeting for the official closure of the project. However, it was more than a typical convention.

They were all there

Despite the size of the multidisciplinary partnership, Space2ID passengers joined Brussels from Spain, Italy, France, Belgium and Greece. Space and MELCA (Mobility, Energy, Logistics, Creative Industries, and Agriculture) clusters concluded on the success of their collaboration and made some final remarks regarding the activities of the project.

VIP’s list

An official project closure event is always the best occasion to present the final and most important results of the collective effort. In this sense, Space2ID crew invited representatives from the European Commission, European Space Agency, Nereus, EARSC, and various regions and proposed them an official presentation overview of the project content and its future vision.

Rocket down?

So, project closure means that the project is done? No more MELCA Trek and Space Innovation Wars? Of course not! Space2ID rocket is down for refuelling before the launch of Space2ID+ or Space2ID 2.0 or Space2ID Vol. 2 or whatever the imagination of partners will call the next generation of Space2ID. The plan was created, the analysis was finished, the calculations for a concrete internationalisation strategy were done and the ambition is here : now it’s time to implement and to get ready for the next stage where MELCA clusters in a Space rocket will travel to China, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Colombia and Chile in order to make business, increase their export rates and make European innovation proud once again.

Till then, unfasten your seatbelts, set back and keep calm, it’s loading…

Shared vision and goals for the future of Europe in space

‘Joint Statement on Shared Vision and Goals for the Future of European Space’ was signed by ESA Director General Jan Woerner and European Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska in Brussels last october 26.

In the past two Space Councils, in an informal setting under the EU Council Presidency of Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the Member States of ESA and the EU have requested ESA and the EC together to come up with a set of joint visions and goals for the future of European space.

Over the past months, a joint drafting team with representatives from ESA and the EU worked together with the aim of identifying these common visions and goals for the two institutions to collaborate in the years to come. These visions and goals were confirmed in September by the ESA Council and Council of the EU as guiding principles for the future cooperation.

Space is part of everyday life of the European citizens. Europe needs to unleash its full potential as an enabler in pushing the frontiers of knowledge, stimulating jobs and sustainable growth, supporting decision and policy making, providing socioeconomic benefits, and inspiring and motivating the next generations.

The common European vision is that Europe remains a world-class actor in space and a partner of choice on the international scene. By 2030, Europe should be able to fully benefit from its space solutions to implement its policies, to strengthen European values and security, improve knowledge and foster prosperity. Every single European citizen should benefit from Europe’s space capacities and capabilities.

The goals identified for the years to come are to:
  • maximise the integration of space into European society and economy, by increasing the use of space technologies and applications to support public policies, providing effective solutions to the big societal challenges faced by Europe and the world, strengthening synergies between civilian and security activities in the fields of navigation, communication and observation, including through monitoring borders, land and maritime security conditions;
  • foster a globally competitive European space sector, by supporting research, innovation, entrepreneurship for growth and jobs across all Member States, and seizing larger shares of global markets;
  • ensure European autonomy in accessing and using space in a safe and secure environment, and in particular consolidate and protect its infrastructures, including against cyber threats.

Sentinel-3A Earth colour data released

The Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite has taken another step towards being fully ‘operational’ as the first data from its Ocean and Land Colour Instrument are made available to monitor the health of our planet.

Following its launch in February, the satellite and instruments have been thoroughly tested and fine-tuned – leading to this important milestone.

Carrying a suite of instruments, Sentinel-3A is arguably the most complex of all the Copernicus Sentinels.

It has been designed to measure Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere to monitor large-scale global dynamics and to provide critical near-realtime information for numerous ocean, land and weather applications.

The Sentinel-3 validation team, a group of expert users, has been receiving sample products since May. Their feedback is essential to both ESA and Eumetsat to ensure the data are of the highest quality, as is needed for the myriad of operational applications that the mission will serve.

At the ‘end of commissioning’ review in July, it was noted that a couple of points had to be addressed before the first data were officially released to the public.

Susanne Mecklenburg, ESA’s Sentinel-3 mission manager, said, “It is imperative that these first-level data are the best quality possible so we are being extremely careful. It is now very gratifying to see data from the satellite’s Ocean and Land Colour Instrument being released to users worldwide.

“Data from the other two instruments – the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer and Radar Altimeter – will be made available in November and December, respectively.”

Offering new eyes on Earth, the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument will monitor the global oceans, and inland waters, including phytoplankton, water quality, harmful algal blooms, sediment transport in coastal areas, El Niño and La Niña events, and climate change.

It will also support observations of vegetation and crop conditions, as well as provide estimates of atmospheric aerosol and clouds – all of which bring significant benefits to society through more informed decision-making.

While the operations of the Sentinel-3A satellite are carried out by Eumetsat, the mission is managed jointly by ESA and Eumetsat.

ESA is responsible for the land data products and Eumetsat for the marine products – all of which are made available for application through Copernicus services.

Hilary Wilson, Eumetsat’s Sentinel-3 project manager, said, “The release of Sentinel-3A’s first operational data is the culmination of a lot of hard work by ESA, Eumetsat and the expert user teams.

“It represents an important milestone for the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service and also for the wider marine monitoring community.

“Routine operations of the satellite have been proceeding smoothly since Eumetsat took over this responsibility in July and we are now focusing on bringing the remaining marine products to this community.”
